Chevron Corporation
Competency-Based System Targets Administrative Staff
Situation
Chevron wanted to develop a competency-based management system for its Administrative Professionals. The company's growth in the marketplace made it essential to invest in training initiatives that would improve job performance and enhance customer relationships.
Solution
Currently, we are working with Chevron to develop a comprehensive system that:
  • Identifies required competencies, behaviorally-anchored rating scales, and training required to achieve excellent performance
  • Identifies knowledge and skill gaps, as well training required to close the gaps
  • Evaluates results to ensure ROI, and monitors the work environment to identify new/changing competency requirements
We conducted focus groups with three employee groups-administrative professionals, supervisors, and internal customers. These sessions identified competencies required for current performance, as well as competencies that would improve job performance.

Outcome
Competencies required by administrative professionals have been defined and behaviors that represent various levels of performance have been documented. We are currently working on a training curriculum to support the identified competencies.

The anticipated ROI is impressive as the talents of Chevron's administrative professionals are cultivated, refined and positioned for a successful future.
